Plan the drive, not just the stops
Most road trips go wrong because of too many hours behind the wheel. A good rule is to keep driving days to around five or six hours, and build in at least one stop that is worth the detour each day.
Map your route in an app, then download offline maps for areas where you might lose signal.
Get the car ready
Check tires, fluids and wipers before a long trip. Pack a basic emergency kit with water, snacks, a flashlight, jumper cables and a blanket.
Leave room for surprises
The best moments often come from the unplanned stop: a roadside diner, an overlook, a small town festival. Leave a few hours open every day so you can say yes.
