Chasing Fall Colors in Colorado

When the aspens turn gold, these are the drives that are worth getting up early for.

When to go

Colorado's aspens usually turn from mid September into early October. Higher elevations and northern areas change first, so if you miss the peak in one spot, head lower or further south.

Drives worth the trip

The Peak to Peak Highway runs along the Front Range between Estes Park and Black Hawk, and is the easiest big color drive from Denver. Guanella Pass, out of Georgetown, climbs through aspen stands to views of the high peaks.

Further out, Kebler Pass near Crested Butte is famous for its enormous aspen groves, and Last Dollar Road near Telluride is a rougher road with huge views that is best in a high clearance vehicle.

The Maroon Bells

The twin peaks reflected in Maroon Lake near Aspen may be the most photographed view in the state. Access is managed with reservations during the busy season, so book your shuttle or parking ahead.
